Spring Break: Wednesday

We went to "Pancakes and Pajamas" with friends.

Yogi send praying mantis egg cases in the mail! We got them set up in their habitat, and we're hoping to see some little nymphs in a few weeks!

We made energy balls,

we played outside,

we got really dizzy on the swing,

we threw "sticky weed" on Dad,

we gathered wood for a campfire,

we helped Dad make the fire,

we twisted on the swing some more,

we cooked hot dogs,

we told ghost stories (and got really scared - especially after Poppy said that Dad was telling the truth!),

we roasted marshmallows (and loved it when they caught on fire!),

we ate s'mores. (Everyone's allergies are pretty bad - Dad said we shouldn't sleep outside.)

We are having a great spring break!

Josiah's Hot Biscuit Tree

One day last spring, my Mom came upon a sad little hibiscus tree that had been marked down to a little bit of nothing. She determined that the only thing wrong with it was that it needed some water. So she bought it and gave it to me.

Josiah loved this little tree and it's beautiful yellow flowers, and quickly adopted it as his own. It was his job to give it water every evening during the hot, hot summer. Between the heat and grasshoppers and a few mishaps with footballs, I'm really not sure how the little hibiscus made it through the summer...but it did! Then we moved it in the house for the winter, where Josiah continued to give it water, but with the craziness that is our house, I'm surprised that it made it...but it did! (Even though it really doesn't look too great...)

BooBoo knew that Josiah loves this little hibiscus tree. And she knew that it really, really needed to be repotted. So part of Josiah's birthday present was a big pot and some dirt for his little tree.

Well, this afternoon as I was telling Josiah that we were going to take care of his tree, he told me that he was really hungry for biscuits. Assuming he was talking about the biscuits we had for breakfast, I explained that they were all gone, but that I could make some more. He started crying - "But I want some biscuits from my hot biscuit tree." Hahahaha, that kid is too funny! (Yogi always calls hibiscus trees "hot biscuit" trees - I had no idea that Josiah had picked up on that! :)

I had to burst his bubble and explain that our hot biscuit tree didn't have any biscuits...but I could still make some for him. He was very disappointed, but finally agreed to that. So we baked them, fixed 'em up with jelly, and he brought them outside to eat with his tree.

He noticed that there was one yellow little leaf on the tree. He was very excited - that one must be about to turn into a biscuit! :) ...then he helped me get the new pot ready, dig the hot biscuit tree up, and move it.

You know those little white dots in potting soil? He was so excited that there were so many "biscuit seeds"!

He was cracking me up - I was texting Mom and Dad through the whole thing. Dad said that he's been looking for hot biscuits on those trees his whole life and has never found one. Well Yogi, here's picture-proof that the yellow leaves on hot biscuit trees turn into biscuits - Josiah is picking one for you! ;)

Oh my goodness Joey-Jo, I had so much fun with you today. You make me smile, you make me laugh, you make my heart so full of joy it just might bust. I love being your mom. post signature

Open House

At Open House at our school, the kindergarten teachers encourage you to let your "kinder kid" be your tour guide. Conner got to do it when he was in kindergarten, and even though we know the school much better now, Micah got to do the honors tonight!

Our first stop was to see the Cityscape that Micah made in art. He wanted us to guess which one was his, and he fooled us! It was those red roads going into the sky...I'd never seen him draw anything like that. (And honestly, I still don't understand exactly what they are or what they mean - but he was sure about them and proud of them. And that's what matters!)

Then we got to see Micah's classroom. Mrs. Sullivan had all kinds of samples of his work laid out at his table. His writing journal stays at school, and I haven't seen him do much of it at home. I just ate up the opportunity to peek at it, and wished there was time to read every word. It is absolutely unbelievable how much that kid has learned and grown since August.

We stopped to look at the projects that he had on the wall outside his classroom, too - a dragon with a story, a frog that he drew half of, and a number project.

Then we were on to Conner's class. He showed us his Famous American project on Albert Einstein. This is something that we've been working on half-heartedly since October, but has been in full swing (as in ordering books from Amazon and conferences with teachers) for the past several weeks. He did a great job, learned a lot, and is particularly proud of the portrait that he drew.

Here's Conner at his desk - all clean and organized (which is something we've really been working on).

Mrs. Joy recorded each of her students reading their mammal report. I know the picture is kind of weird, but you get the idea. We were so proud - Conner did an excellent job of looking at the camera and making "eye contact" while he was reading. He wasn't coached to do this - Bret's ecstatic that we've got a natural public speaker on our hands!

While we were waiting for Conner's turn, birthday boy Josiah made himself comfortable with Mrs. Joy's tiger. He fell in love with that thing at Meet the Teacher, and cuddles with it every chance he gets!

We were also greatly entertained by some of the fill-in-the-blank proverbs that Conner had written. (Such as "A woman's place is in the world," and "Blood is thicker than veins.")

Micah then took us to the library, where we did a little book fair shopping. And then we were off to our little tour guide's most anticipated stop: the garden. Kindergarten had planted snap dragons and lettuce, and one of their lettuce plants was still alive! :)

And then, after a quick little tour of the music and art rooms, we were headed home.

I told you boys earlier, but I'll tell you again - thank you for being such wonderfully sweet and smart kids so that we had so many exciting things to see tonight! We love to get to see what you do at school!
